We hope you are enjoying your visit to our site. We would like to be in touch with potters and pottery groups everywhere, to share ideas and perhaps help each other to promote useful potting activities. We have also undertaken special joint projects, for example the creation of tiles for a sensory courtyard for a local children's Hospice, CLICK here for pictures and information on this project.

Potters Tips - useful tips from our potters' experiences

Joining spouts to teapots.
When crosshatching spout and pot for joining together use your knife at an angle to create a rough raised surface. Dip bottom of spout in water and offer to pot cross- hatching which has been left dry. The raised clay on both surfaces with the water will produce the necessary slip for adhesion. Smooth together in the normal way .

Another use for cling film in the pottery.

Wrap your telephone handset completely in cling film. You can then receive a call or dial a number without having to stop to clean up or grab for a towel !

Weighing out small quantities of oxides etc. :-

If you don't have an accurate balance for weighing out small amounts of oxides etc., weigh out 5 grammes and then smooth the powder into a neat flat rectangle. Divide the rectangle into 5 equal parts with a knife. You then have 5 piles weighing a fairly accurate 1 gr. each !

Newspaper in the pottery

When your whirler is in use with another pot, a folded newspaper makes an excellent alternative for working on a pot which needs to be turned round for decorating. Place the pot in the middle of the folded newspaper on a smooth table or bench surface and use the edges of the paper to turn the pot as needed.

Large pots thrown directly on the wheel can present a problem when it comes to removing them. Place a piece of newspaper over the top of the pot to create a vacuum inside the pot. A damp pot can then be removed with much less risk of distortion.
